Real Patient Day

I had jamie my little sister be my first patient. I picked her because she is one of the most easy going people I know. She also make me clam. I think the appt. could not of gone better. I mean with what I did myself. I had everything that I needed that day set up. I did things in the right order. And I was one of the first to have my chart in. Few of the things that really bug me was jamie was the 2nd patient who sign in, but the last patient check in. Mr. Soleman did not page me or change the dot to yellow on the computer until ten after, which made me get behind everyone else so I always had to wait for the insturtor. I was ready to take x-rays early but Prof. Vining told us we could not go early, but by the time I went to the radiology lab people were already half way through their x-rays. I did great on the x-rays and needed no retakes. I was really happy that it only took me ten min. to do everything. set up, take them, process and clean up. Probing took longer then I like to amitt, and it was werid because I kept getting fours but then I would check them again I would only get a threes. I only missed one spot of caluclus, which I was surprised. I know that my patient was a really easy patient, but I think it was really helpful to me to go through the steps. Next patient I will be fine to have a harder patient and ok if I do not get very far.

Hygienist today

Today I got to be the hygienist. Karli was my patient. I was able to set up before lunch, which was nice. The only thing I forgot was the articulating paper. I need to put some in my draw because I am out. I feel like it is getting easier. I am catching on to what chair position I need to be in. I feel like I am getting into the col better. I need to work on not dropping things. I dropped my ultra sonic (good thing I was done with it) and dropped the saliva ejection. Maybe I am pregnant. J/K

Patient

I was Karli's Patient today. I love her unit because of the view. Karli was so soft . She was so scared to hurt me. She finished scaling on the right side. Then she did all four sealants and polished. I helped a few people clean their unit so we can all go get the H1N1 Shot at the Dee Event Center. It was so easy to get the shot. We walked in and walked back out. There was no waiting. Anyways back to clinic... My goal is to help others clean.

Patient

I was the patient today for Linda Wood. Time went by fast. I had a blinket under my lower back which helped alot. I read the module and went over the sharping PE while I was in the chair. I need to work on my down finishing stroke. I helped linda clean. Things were coming together.

1st mock patient

Today was a lot of fun. Linda Wood was my patient. She is a sweetest person ever. I got to the clinic early but no one was here. I ended up setting up as much as I could without my jacket. I set up more then I needed but I felt so prepared. I took my time and made sure that I was doing everything in order. It felt great when I over heard Prof. Costley go over what they were looking for. I was able to check off everything she said. high five me!!! I kept wanting to use the ultra sonic like the air-powder polish, but I finally got it down. There was only one spot that I missed the calculus. The charting took so much more time then I thought it would, but I think that I did a good job. Next time I want to make sure that I have enough time to chart.

In your face

I passed off the air-power polish today and Fl2. Again I got a tip that did not work. I did better with the air-power polish but still do not like it. It get all over and my face is covered. We learned about sharping. I love to do things with my hands so I enjoy sharping. I really want Prof. Costley show me the way she does it because I think that I would like it better.

Sealant

We did sealants today which was really fun. I learned today how to do the walkout, which is really easy. I put the sealant in Linda #30. I thought that I did a great job but she has a very tight bite so Kim had to pick most of it out :(

Air-power polish

I hated the air-power polish. I is so missy and hurts. It felt like I burned my tongue. And it sucked setting it up. I went first and my tip did not work. It took prof Costley over 30 mins to get it going and by that time I was almost done with Brooke and it was time to switch. So Brooke totally missed out on the air-powder polish. Brooke got to do it on me. At first time was fine, but she was only using the water, then she learned that she needed to push harder to polish. And then the pain!!!! I really do not think I would never use it in an office.

ultra sonic

I did not get much time to practices on the ultra sonic for very long because we had two PE's to do. But what I learned was to hold it lighter. To let it do it job. I also where to record the camera in tx.

Today we got to practices more. Things went smoother because of going over it on Monday. I focused on scaling. I feel that I still need a lot of practice but in time I will get it.

Practice Day

Today was Practice mock Practice day :) We went over the steps that we need to do with a real PT up to the OHI. It was nice to see the order of things and to apply what we have been learning. It was also nice not do any PE's. I was with Kirsten today which is always nice to see a different smile. Today when I got here my chair was already set up for me which was way nice.

Today in clinic we when over Dental Screening. There are a few things that are different than I am use to, but not too bad. The assistant in me kept wanting to do more and wanting to know what would need to be done about different treatment like mobility and etc. I was paired up with Linda and Karlie which was great because I am enjoying working with others and getting to know them more. I am doing better about being prepared and having questions. I am excited to hear that the next few days we are going to be able to practices more. Things that I would like to practices again is the universal instrument, probing gently, getting the explorer in the col area, focus on my adaptation, angulation, and practices intra & exter exam terminology.

Wednesday day was really frustrating because I was only able to practice for about 15-20 mins and my partner had a hour and 15 mins. I need to practices more on the posterior teeth and finding the col.

In clinic we when over anterior instrument which was the first time I felt like I was a real hygienist. It was great. I really need to work better on the posterior. It felt so werid.
The PE are confusing right now because they are all out of order and I am not sure what due and when.

Today in clinic we went over the instruments which I think it is going to take me a little while to get them down. My Goal is to have them down by heart. I also want to go over the words and say them right.

Today in clinic we when over explorers. It was not to bad. I need to keep in mind not to hold the insturment so tight. I am amazed that there is so many thing involved being a hygienist. But I know that I can do this. I need to take one thing at a time. I think back to the time I was told that I would never get into the dental hygiene program and see how far I have came. It is amazing to me and I am so proud of my self for not letting any one tell me what I can and can not do.

Things that I am looking forward to... Giving the anesthesia and learning how to use all the different instruments.
I am doing much better on the reading.

Yesterday we got to practice probing on each other. I learned that walking strokes feels better then dragging the prob around the tooth to the Pt. It does not need much pressure to get the reading. I want to work on reading the col area.

How I am doing... I am catching on in clinic quickly, but need to do better in the reading. I need to set time a side for each class.
Goal... I need to work on the land marks and pronouning them.

In my reading and in clinic I learned when I am taking the Pt Blood pressure I need to feel how high I should pump and when I can not feel the pulse any more then I need to pump it up 20 more. I think that I am getting health history, but I am still worried about spelling everything correctly.

Yesterday I was able to go to mid-town clinic and help out for six hours. It was way different. It took me a little bit to get use to charting different. I was able to do some exams my self, which was way cool. I need to learn the terms better so that I can chart better.

Clinic: I have being really enjoying clinic because of the hands on learning. I have learned today how to look up drugs in DDR. I really thought it would be harder then it really was. I am looking forward to doing vitals next time.

Things that I am learning...
BWX are paralleling tech.
Distal Incisor edges are more round.

In Clinic my pod is always done first, which I love because I rather be ahead then try to catch up. The first few days have been a review for me, but my goal is to learn something new each day and I have. I have learned that the chair needs to be lower then I am use to. I have also learned about patterson eagle soft, which I was not use to.

Day Three- I am enjoy being in the program. Every one is so nice. I have clinic monday mornings and wed. afternoon. Rad in the morning of wed. I was worried about today (wed) being so long, but everything is running so smooth. I do not feel overwhelm but enjoying learning new things.

Day one: Not to bad. I think I am going to love the next two years.
